About the District
The Taghkanic Fire District was established in 2024 to provide governance, funding, and oversight for fire protection, rescue, and emergency services in the Town of Taghkanic, Columbia County, New York. Through responsible stewardship of public resources, the District supports the dedicated volunteers of the Taghkanic Volunteer Fire Company in safeguarding the lives, property, and rural character of our community.
What We Do
The Fire District is the public entity responsible for the financial and administrative oversight of fire protection services within its boundaries. This includes adopting an annual budget, managing capital equipment purchases, maintaining district facilities, and ensuring compliance with New York State law. The District is governed by a five-member Board of Fire Commissioners, each elected by the residents of the district.
The Taghkanic Volunteer Fire Company is the operational arm that provides emergency response. Founded in 1944, the Fire Company’s approximately 30 active volunteer members respond to an average of 90+ calls per year, covering almost 50 square miles across the towns of Taghkanic and Gallatin, and neighboring districts. Commissioners are elected to five year terms on a rotating basis, such that one commissioner position is up for election each calendar year.
Public Meetings
The Board of Commissioners meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 PM at the Taghkanic Fire House, located at 631 Old Route 82, Taghkanic, NY. All meetings are open to the public, and each agenda includes an opportunity for public comment. Meeting agendas are posted in advance and minutes of prior meetings are published on this website following approval by the Board.
